Summer BlockBusters

Typically, summer is the time for huge blockbuster movies and family entertainment for all ages. This was always the time in my childhood when my family and I would pile into the car and head for the drive-in. Back then, it didn’t matter what was playing because we were just thrilled to be going.

This summer’s movie season is already kicking into high gear, and it isn’t even Memorial Day yet. So far, Star Trek is leading the pack, giving us a fresh new take on the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, bringing this unique story to another generation of sci-fi fans. But this isn’t the only sci-fi movie people are interested in seeing – this weekend Terminator Salvation premieres, moving this storyline into the future. We will finally get to see John Connor in 2018, fighting the fight we have only heard about until now.

This past weekend, Angels and Demons made its splash onto the big screen. This is the first book by Dan Brown (author of The Da Vinci Code), but the second of his books to be immortalized on screen. This is NOT a sequel to the Da Vinci Code – however, Angels and Demons does have the character of Robert Langdon. This is an excellent movie – and before people start complaining this movie is not historically or religiously accurate – it is just a movie based on a book of fiction. Brown never claims it to be anything else.

Other June releases with buzz include: Land of the Lost on June 5th; The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 on June 12th; and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on June 24th. I’m having mixed feelings about Land of the Lost – this was my favorite show when I was a little girl and I’m afraid they will butcher it on the big screen. I don’t like Will Ferrell and his “bathroom humor,” but I’m going to have to go see it because I’m afraid I’ll miss something.

Of course, the movie I am most waiting for is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – to be released on July 15th. Since the postponement of this movie last November, excitement has grown to a fever pitch with Potter fans eagerly anticipating the premiere. Other July releases include: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Ice Age 3) on July 1st; Public Enemy on July 1st (Johnny Depp – be still my heart); and Aliens in the Attic on July 31st.

On into August, anticipation is building for Julie and Julia on August 7th; G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra on August 7th; and Inglourious Basterds on August 21st (Quentin Tarantino rocks!). Wonder what took them so long in bring G.I. Joe to the big screen?

So, what movies are you looking forward to this summer??

Loved Star Trek, just saw Wolverine - finally. Loved it. I'm waiting, waiting, waiting for the new Harry Potter, and Quentin definitely rocks and I can't wait for that one, either.
